Maize, cassava, soybean and rice: Zambia's processing raw materials

Maize is a major food crop of Zambia, and the main summer cereal harvest is predominantly maize, with the Central, Copperbelt and Eastern provinces together producing about half of the domestic crop. This makes it a natural raw material for flour, starch and animal-feed plants. Soybeans are grown by commercial farmers and supply oil and a protein meal that poultry feed producers use. In the wetter northern part of the country, roots and tubers are most important, and cassava is the staple for much of the population of Luapula Province, though fresh roots deteriorate quickly and need to be processed close to where they are harvested.

Rice is a minor crop nationally but is important in parts of Northern Province, where paddy has to be parboiled, dried and milled to a consistent grain quality. Zambia is landlocked, the rains fall between November and April, and an electricity supply constraint hindered irrigation in a recent season, so processing close to the farm, and drying or concentrating products to cut weight and spoilage, has particular value.

Likely users are agro-processors, milling companies, feed manufacturers and cooperatives who must move product over road and rail connections that FAO has described as inadequate, to reach regional and port markets.

Products Relevant to Zambia

15 of the 73 products in the catalogue are listed for Zambia, in 7 categories: Fruit & Vegetable Processing (2), Starch, Flour, Edible Oil & Food Processing (3), Drying & Dehydration Systems (5), Cocoa, Shea, Palm Oil & Oilseed Processing (1), Cereals, Tubers & Sugar Processing (2), Specialty African Botanical & Natural Ingredients (1), Specialty Food, Beverage & By-Product Processing (1). The plants for Zambia’s own raw materials come first. A listing is a catalogue listing, not a statement of demand or supply; the final configuration depends on your raw material, target product and capacity.

Maize

As a major food crop, maize can be dry-milled for flour or wet-processed for starch, with drying helping stabilise moisture before storage and milling; maize starch and flour products are relevant to this raw material.

Rice

Paddy from rice-growing parts of Northern Province needs parboiling and controlled drying before milling, steps that reduce breakage and improve storage life; parboiling and drying products are relevant to this raw material.

Planning a project in Zambia

What to Settle Before You Ask for a Proposal

  • Landlocked access

Zambia is landlocked, and imports have been reported to move through Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, then by road or rail; plan freight, clearance time and heavy-lift routes into the site early, and compare the seaports that could serve the project.

  • Rainy season and drying

Rains fall from November to April, when sun drying becomes unreliable. Mechanical dryers, optionally with solar assistance, give processors predictable moisture control for grain, cassava and rice.

  • Scale and power supply

An electricity supply constraint hindered irrigation in a recent season, so define throughput, steam or biomass fuel options and any backup generation before selecting a plant, so equipment matches real utilities.

FAQ

Questions About Plants for Zambia

Is a cassava starch plant suitable for northern Zambia?

It can be, provided there is a steady supply of fresh roots near the plant, because roots spoil quickly after harvest. A proposal discussion would look at washing, rasping, starch separation and drying, sized to the root volumes you can actually collect.

What do I need to specify soybean oil processing equipment for a Zambian farm?

State annual bean availability, whether you want crude or refined oil, how you intend to use the meal, and the power and fuel available on site. These details decide the choice between pressing, solvent extraction and refining stages.

How should a landlocked Zambian site prepare for an equipment enquiry?

Share your location, raw material, expected throughput and available utilities through the enquiry form so the plant and packing plan can be scoped realistically. Equipment for an inland site is planned around port clearance and long road or rail legs, which a technical proposal should address.

Does Kadali Africa Ventures have an office in Zambia?

Kadali Africa Ventures Limited has offices in Accra, Ghana and Kano, Nigeria, and none in Zambia. Engineering and manufacturing scope for each product is confirmed in the technical proposal.

What should I send for a Zambia project proposal?

Use the form on this page. Give your raw material, the product you want to make, the capacity and its basis (for example kg per hour or tonnes per day) and your site.
