Ring-die feed pellet mill with its motor and hopper in a manufacturer’s workshop

Animal Feed Plant Enquiry (Poultry, Cattle & Aqua Feed)

A feed project in Africa usually starts from a local supply of grain, oilseed cake, brans or fish meal and a livestock, poultry or fish customer base. Before a plant can be sized, the buyer has to decide the species and life stage, the product form (mash, pellet or extruded), the formulation, the throughput per hour and the hours the mill will run. A complete feed mill covering grinding, mixing, pelleting, extrusion, cooling and bagging is not a standard listed product here. Where a project includes a drying, evaporation or filtration duty for a feed ingredient, that stage can be assessed on its own.

A feed mill in broad terms receives and stores raw materials, grinds them, batches and mixes them to formulation, optionally conditions and pellets or extrudes the mix, then cools, screens and bags it. The quality of the result depends on formulation accuracy, grinding fineness, mixing uniformity, pellet durability and dust control. The process equipment in this range is extraction, evaporation and drying machinery, and a feed project touches it at specific points: concentrating a liquid ingredient in an evaporator, or drying a liquid or wet solid ingredient in a spray, fluidised-bed or vacuum dryer. Whether any of that applies depends on the ingredient and its moisture.

Major Plant Equipment

  • Spray dryer for turning a liquid feed into powder
  • Fluidised-bed dryer for granules and powders
  • Vacuum paddle dryer for wet solids and pastes
  • Falling-film or multiple-effect evaporator for liquid concentration
  • Filtration and centrifuge equipment
  • Clean-in-place (CIP) skid
  • PLC panel and instrumentation

Applications

  • Planning a poultry feed project
  • Planning a cattle feed project
  • Planning an aqua feed project
  • Drying or concentrating a liquid or wet feed ingredient, subject to review
  • Early-stage feasibility discussion on a feed-ingredient process

Key Features

  • A Clear Answer on Scope

You learn early whether your project falls inside the process-equipment range or outside it, so effort is not spent where the range cannot help.

  • Process Equipment Where It Fits

If a feed ingredient needs drying, evaporation or filtration, those machines can be assessed in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable construction.

  • Raw-Material Moisture Sets the Duty

Grain, cake and brans pick up moisture in storage, and wet by-products spoil fast. How much drying or concentrating an ingredient needs follows from its moisture, volume and the fuel available.

  • Trial Work for Ingredient Processes

If an ingredient process is within scope, its parameters are established in process development and pilot validation, not assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a complete poultry, cattle or aqua feed mill offered?
No. Grinding, mixing, pelleting, extrusion, cooling and bagging lines are not a standard listed product, and no capacity or price is published for a complete mill. Each enquiry is reviewed against the process equipment in the range, and the reply states in which part of the project, if any, help is possible.
What should I decide before planning any feed mill?
Settle the species and life stage, the product form, the formulation and the raw materials you can buy through the year. Then fix the hourly throughput and daily running hours. Pelleted feed passes through a conditioning chamber, where roughly 4 to 6 percent water, usually as steam, may be added before the press, and the hot pellets then need cooling and drying. Fish feeds may be made by extrusion, and small fish and fry need very fine meal or granules, so aqua feed generally calls for finer grinding. Mash is the simplest route. These choices shape the whole layout.
Which raw-material issues matter in a warm, humid climate?
Grain, oilseed cake and brans pick up moisture in storage. Moisture, temperature and pests are the main factors behind mould growth, and mycotoxin contamination can follow improper harvesting, storage and processing, so intake moisture checks and dry, ventilated storage matter. These are controlled at the buying and storage stage, before material reaches the mill, and they influence how much drying or conditioning an ingredient needs.
Where could process equipment from this range help a feed project?
The range includes drying equipment such as the spray dryer, evaporators and filtration equipment. If your project includes drying or concentrating a feed ingredient, whether those machines fit can be assessed. A vacuum evaporator is one example for liquid concentration.
What decides dust, safety and cleanliness in a feed plant?
Fires and explosions from accumulated grain dust are a recognised hazard in feed mills, as well as a health and housekeeping problem, so enclosed conveying, dust extraction and sound earthing are usually part of the layout of any mill. Cross-contamination between medicated and non-medicated feed, or between species, is managed by sequencing production runs, flushing the system and, where needed, separate lines. This applies to the mill itself and is outside the scope of the process-equipment range.
What should I send with a feed plant enquiry?
Send the species (poultry, cattle or aquaculture), the product form (mash, pellet or extruded), the main raw materials and formulation, the hourly or daily capacity, the utilities at site and the location. Add the ingredient, moisture or solids content, and target output, if a drying or concentration duty is involved. A precise brief means scope can be stated sooner.
Can a process-equipment partner work alongside my feed-mill supplier?
Possibly. If your line needs a dryer, evaporator or filtration stage for an ingredient, that stage can be assessed on its own and confirmed as in or out of scope. Related drying duties for produce are covered under the fruit and vegetable dehydration plant page, and wider context sits under agro and food processing solutions.
Which feed ingredients might need drying or concentrating?
Wet or liquid by-products such as brewers' spent grain, distillery stillage, fruit pomace or fish-processing streams are the usual candidates, because they spoil quickly and are costly to haul wet. Drying or concentrating makes them storable; whether it pays depends on their moisture, volume and the fuel available. To start that assessment, request a quote.
