Gum Arabic Processing Plant

Gum arabic is the dried exudate of Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal trees, collected in the Sahel and other dry-savanna regions of Africa. Virtually all gum arabic from the Sahelian zone is exported, and kibbling, powdering and spray-drying are among the further processes done in destination countries. A processor who wants to capture more value can clean and sort the gum, dissolve it, remove insolubles, and finish it as a spray-dried powder or a concentrated solution that beverage, confectionery and other ingredient buyers can use directly. This page is aimed at gum processors, exporters and cooperatives. The questions to settle first are which gum and grade you will buy, what powder or solution the customer will specify, and how clean and how light-coloured that product has to be. Gum arabic is not a standard listed plant, so each project starts as a feasibility review.

The nearest listed equipment comes from the gum-extraction plants for karaya and tragacanth, which start with raw-gum cleaning and sorting and run through extraction, separation, concentration and drying, plus the spray dryer for converting liquids to powder. For gum arabic, engineers test whether those building blocks fit your gum's viscosity, the insoluble matter you need to remove, the colour you must hold and the powder specification. Product-contact parts on the related plants are SS 316L and designed for CIP cleaning. The route here is indicative: the process, equipment and capacity are confirmed after raw-material review and laboratory or pilot work.

Typical Process Route

1

Receive, Clean and Sort the Gum

Raw gum is inspected and sorted by colour and cleanliness; Sudan's grading system, for example, ranks uniform, light-coloured nodules above darker pieces. Bark, sand and other foreign matter are removed, with size reduction added where the dissolution step needs smaller pieces.

2

Dissolve in Water

Gum is taken into water in a jacketed, agitated vessel. Time, temperature and the amount of gum per batch depend on the grade and are fixed in feasibility work. Gum arabic is valued for its low viscosity in water, which helps spray drying, but viscosity still climbs as solids rise.

3

Clarify and Filter

Insoluble matter and haze are removed by filtration and, where needed, centrifugation. The degree of clarity required follows from the buyer's specification and colour target.

4

Concentrate

A vacuum or falling-film evaporator can raise the solids content before drying, which reduces the water the dryer has to remove. How far to concentrate is set by the viscosity at the target solids and confirmed by trial.

5

Spray Dry

The liquid is atomised into hot air and dried to powder. Whether your gum solution suits the dryer, and at what inlet and outlet conditions, is established by trial and not assumed.

6

Collect, Sieve and Pack

Powder is captured in a cyclone and bag filter, sieved to take out oversize particles, and packed in a way that keeps moisture out for the shelf life you need.

Applications

  • Sorted, cleaned and kibbled gum for export buyers
  • Spray-dried gum arabic powder
  • Purified, concentrated gum solutions
  • Emulsifier and stabiliser supply for beverage, confectionery and other ingredient makers
  • Allied gum and polysaccharide extraction projects

Key Features

  • Review Before Any Commitment

Since the plant is not a standard product, the gum, the target product and the capacity are examined first.

  • Assembled from Existing Equipment

The route combines gum cleaning and sorting, dissolution vessels, filtration, evaporation and spray drying, all of which are established parts of the range.

  • Trial Work on Your Gum

Dissolution, filtration and spray-drying parameters come from laboratory or pilot work on your own material, not a generic figure.

  • Concentrate Before the Dryer

Evaporating ahead of the spray dryer removes much of the water more cheaply than the dryer can, limited by how far viscosity rises with solids.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a gum arabic processor settle before asking for a plant?
First, which gum you will buy: both Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal are accepted sources of gum arabic, but their characteristics differ significantly, and each is available in several grades and forms. Second, the product your customer specifies, whether powder, solution or both. Third, the limits that matter to them, typically insoluble matter, colour, viscosity behaviour, moisture and microbial counts. Fourth, how many hours a day and months a year you can source and run. These inputs drive every later choice.
Is gum arabic a standard plant that can be bought off the shelf?
No. The range includes the equipment from which a gum arabic line is built, such as cleaning and sorting, dissolution and extraction vessels, filtration, evaporation and spray drying, but each enquiry is reviewed by engineers against your gum, target product and capacity before any supply commitment is made.
What do I need to share for a feasibility review?
Send the gum type, grade and form (raw nodules, kibbled or powder), the target product, the specification you must meet, the capacity per day, the utilities at site and the plant location. Representative samples help a great deal, because laboratory or pilot trials on your gum are the surest way to confirm the route.
Can gum arabic be spray dried?
Gum arabic is widely sold as spray-dried powder, so the route is well known, and its low viscosity in water helps the process, but results depend on the individual solution. Spray dryers convert liquid feeds to powder with the atomiser chosen to suit viscosity and the target particle size. Whether your solution suits a given dryer, and the inlet and outlet conditions, is confirmed in feasibility work and pilot trials.
What drives energy use in a gum arabic line?
Mostly the water that has to be removed. Every kilogram of water in the dryer feed costs heat, so a more concentrated feed generally saves energy, but viscosity still rises with solids and sets a practical limit on how far you can go. An evaporator ahead of the dryer can shift part of the duty to a more efficient stage, as in a vacuum evaporator. The balance is worked out with trial data. The industrial drying and dehydration solutions page gives wider context.
Can the plant remove insolubles and improve colour?
Clarification, filtration and concentration can be assessed as part of the review. How much insoluble matter can be taken out, and how far colour can be held, depends on the starting gum and on the limits your customer sets, so they are defined and tested with you before a configuration is proposed.
Which related gum plants are in the range?
The range lists extraction plants for karaya and tragacanth gums, which follow a cleaning, extraction, separation, concentration and drying route. They are different gums, so they show the equipment approach, not a confirmed gum arabic configuration. More ingredients of African origin sit in the specialty African botanical and natural ingredient plants category.
How should I prepare for pilot work?
Collect a few representative lots, each labelled by species, origin and harvest, stored dry and clear of dust. Note the moisture and colour of each, and write down the powder or solution specification you must meet. Ask in your enquiry whether lab and pilot trials can be arranged before commercial sizing.
How should the powder be packed and stored?
Spray-dried gum powder takes up moisture from humid air, so a warm, humid site needs sealed, moisture-barrier packing and a dry packing room. Fine powder also calls for dust control around the dryer outlet, sieve and packing point.
What decides the price of a gum arabic line?
Mainly the water to be evaporated and dried per hour, which sets evaporator and dryer size; the spray dryer type and its air handling; the filtration needed for the insoluble and colour limits; and the level of automation. Price follows the confirmed scope, so request a quote with your gum, target product and capacity.
